This thread smells like a foul bait for Google fanboys, but I read an interesting article on extremetech (http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,2845,2357606,00.asp) today that really legitimizes Chrome as a browser which is taking over. I still view Chrome as a niche program for those who are more tech-savvy and geek about things like internet browsers, but recently I've seen more and more people using it.
What do you put the odds of an actual Chrome takeover at? Given internet browser usage rates (I.E. is STILL number one?! come on people), I'm skeptical. People stick with what they know, and Firefox has embedded itself as a browser that most non-tech people actually know (my mom knows what Firefox is, although if you told her it was an internet browser she'd have no idea what that means). But if anybody can pull off something like this, it's Google (where was gmail even 5 years ago?).
What do you think?

I await the google to come to me, and tell to me the secrets of the earth. The google shall rise above them all, and the nations shall bow to the superiority that is...the google...
The coming is nigh!

OMG GOOGLE CHROME IS ZE BEST!!! LMAO ROFL COPTER
In all seriousness... I've replaced Firefox with Chrome myself though I do miss some of the plugins that Firefox had to offer, but it isn't going to be long before Chrome allows plugins without the Dev version being installed. I think it will be a long time before Firefox, Chrome, etcetera gains a large market share if IE continues to be embedded in Windows natively since the majority of the users are like you said, "non-tech people... mom".

Firefox: 46%
All Versions of IE combined: 37%
On the actual topic and NOT pointing out fenster's poor reading comprehension ;) jk
I love Chrome. SO fast. Very slick, minimalist interface. Only use FF at work to be able to use the IE conversion for webmail and stuff. At home, its all about Chrome. GJ Google they rock ^^

Wow, interesting. I hadn't looked in a while I guess. It's amazing how much Firefox has infiltrated the browser market - if anything I think this makes things a little more difficult for Google. I wonder if Mozilla is starting to worry.

Unfortunately? (fortunately?) Firefox has become rather bloated. Firefox was like that hot petite girl that you met and fell in love with. You thought at the time that you would never want anything else, you were happy, and life couldn't be better. Well then over time you moved in together, she got comfortable and stopped caring so much about exercising and eating right. One day you wake up and realize that those aren't the living room curtains your staring at, but rather a moo moo dress. Yes that is right, a moo moo. It is only then that you realize that the girl next door is quite hot, has new features, and you fall in love all over again and the whole vicious cycle starts all over again... Except with Chrome. <333

I have a feeling this is only counting one sector of the browser market, and most likely more of the consumer side. Believe me, IE is still *the* most used browser in businesses and probably will be for a long time. The issue is that businesses have built very specific applications around IE and its intricacies and those applications are either too complex to update or work just fine, so they don't get update. Let's face it, some companies still use DOS programs because it simply works for them. That or companies that have been using other Microsoft products and services that just work better in IE, such as Sharepoint. That being said, apparently even the next version of Sharepoint is going to have better cross-browser support, so hopefully more and more companies can ditch IE for a more secure and better browser.
That being said, on the consumer side, I think Google's prominence as a search engine will help it become more popular than Firefox and ultimately gain a bigger market share consumer-side. I've already seen people using Chrome over IE or Firefox and I've personally been using it for a couple weeks now (though I was using a dev build for the extensions & after a week it kept constantly crashing, so I'm back to FF) and I would definitely switch over once it becomes more stable.

I do like Safari, but it's lack or *real* extensions is a deal breaker for me. I think Chrome and Safari are on par for quality, but I feel Google is taking it more seriously than Apple.

Chrome is statistically faster than Firefox and IE8, but I havent switched yet for the lack of plugins and themes, because for some reason like malkierx said, I have a bloated browser that slows down on java heavy pages :( but runs like butter on chrome.

Grab the new beta of Chrome. It has both plugins and themes. :)
